How we decorate

So after being in this house for well over a year, we decided to hang a couple of things in the boys room. So, I just went in to put a couple of things away and this is what I saw!

NICE! Oh well, maybe now that he sees them, Max might actually wear them instead of going commando!

Dilemma

I know this is a very un-Sunday-like post. But I am starting to realize that I may need something to wear on our trip to Hawaii next week. We are going for the National Oral Surgery conference and I am SO excited about it. I am quite the fashion novice, and have proved that for years.

Example #1 I bought only one dress for a dance in High School, and it was my senior year. Thank goodness for lots of friends with cute clothes who are willing to share!!

Example #2 On my wedding day, I got up, took a shower as usual, dried my hair as usual, did my make-up as usual, got dressed, went to the temple, and got married. I then sported my headband veil and headed out for all the pictures. I was unaware at any time that this might be the day to have someone with a little bit of style and knowledge do something fun with my hair, and do some appropriate make-up.

Anyway, I have realized that many people go out and get a few new outfits for a big trip like this and it leaves me wondering what I should do. I am sure I can get by with what I've got for most everything except for a couple of possible fancy dinner/dance events. Since I usually wear some sort of jersey knit dress, or lame skirt/shirt combo to church every week, I figure this might be the event to buy something nice and fun for.

Here is where you come in. I have my eye on two Anthropologie numbers and want everyone's vote. I love this store SO MUCH and might actually let myself splurge this time. So, do you like the polka-dot, or the ruffles? I'm waiting with bated breath!!

Last call for favorite tunes!

I did a post a while ago asking for your favorite running tunes. Therein lies the problem. I didn't quite get the response I was looking for ( I don't run, so SORRY...blah blah blah), so I have decided to amend my request.

I am now asking you all to please comment with your favorite "get pumped" tunes. I am trying to finalize my marathon play list and really need some songs to motivate me through the whole 26.2 miles. (yes, the .2 is very important...ask anyone who has run one) Anyway, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, tell me the songs you listen to that really fire you up and give you energy. So, no excuse that your not a runner!!! Wherever you listen to music is okay. If you drive with the windows down and the base pumpin' GREAT! If you sing in the shower, GREAT! If you dance with your kids in the living room, GREAT!!! Just share the love!! Now get typing!

100 random things about me!

That was then...this is now.

In true blog fashion I am posting 100 things about me in honor of my 100Th post. I have to laugh because it took me a bit longer to get here than many of my friends who started blogs AFTER me. But, I am trying to find a good balance with REAL world, and BLOGGING world. Anyway, here it goes...

The Perfect Storm

I had a REALLY great day today. No big exciting events, I didn't win the lottery, I didn't get organized, and I didn't get any time to relax. I WAS really patient with my kids today and I really slowed down.

Now, I'd like to believe that my prayers had finally been answered and that this is just the new me. Reality tells me that is was a coming together of several events that made it all work out...thus, The Perfect Storm.

I was shocked when Max and Nora were up at 6:30am and not any earlier. I was further surprised when I realized that I had slept from 12:00am to 6:30am STRAIGHT without having to get up to use the bathroom. Sounds weird, but it put a little smile on my face. We went straight downstairs as usual, but this time Nora wanted to go outside right away. So, we headed out to the backyard and it was a gorgeous crisp morning. (Max thought it was cold and had to put on a sweatshirt...he has officially adapted to AZ) We just walked around the backyard looking at the flowers and trees, and enjoying the quiet beginning of the day. Once the house started humming I couldn't believe the good manners the kids were using. They were listening right away and saying "okay Mom", instead of "But...". All Moms know what a dream that is.

I believe it was that calm quiet, peaceful, polite beginning that then put me in the mood to handle it all. For some reason all the usual little "bothers" weren't that big of a deal. Like the fact that I waited an hour in the Pediatricians office before even being called back to the room and I was only the third patient of the day. My kids were DONE by then, but for some reason I stayed calm. By the way, Nora Jayne has officially crossed the 20 lb. barrier!!! It only took her 18 months. Does that mean I am a bad parent because she has been forward facing since she was a year? She is 5% in weight, 25% for head circumference, and 85% for height!! Wowza! Wish I had measurements like that!! But I digress...

I do want to give credit here though to the power of prayer. I have been praying for more patience for years now. I think I have realized that I have to DO all that I can, and the Lord will then give me the extra I need. I am so grateful for a day like today. It makes me realize again how blessed I am to have all that I have. And I'll take it while I can because I am well aware that tomorrow it could be a whole different story. I have felt a little guilty lately because I have been blogging so much about me and have hardly mentioned my kids except for the fact that I feel overwhelmed and stressed. I have AMAZING kids and am so grateful for their BIG personalities and oodles of energy. I know it will serve them well in life and just hope that I can help them channel it instead of let it drive me crazy!

I know it's not the most exciting post, but I really wanted to document that these days do happen, and how much better it is when I slow down and don't sweat the small stuff!

New Art Obsession

Ya Ya, I know, it's another Van Gogh!! But can you blame me?!! At the risk of sounding totally cliche'...... it speaks to me. I will definitely be asking for a reproduction of this beauty for Christmas. I seriously want to design a whole house around this painting and the colors in it!!! Okay, I may just have to settle for the Master bedroom or something. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

Tell all Tuesday - You Can Quote Me On That!

I did a post recently called "Probably the Best Quote Ever". So click on the title if you want to read that one. But here is another one that I think of often. It is from Jenkin Lloyd Jones, but most often associated with President Gordon B. Hinckley. He is amazing. I want his perspective. I'm also going to add one more that I just came across recently from the late Elder Neal A. Maxwell. Can you tell what stage of my life I am in by these two quotes? "Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he has been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to be just like people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, and most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is just like an old time rail journey ... delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride."
Our lives cannot be both faith-filled and stress free...Therefore, how can you and I really expect to glide naively through life, as if to say, Lord, give me experience, but not grief, not sorrow, not pain, not opposition, not betrayal, and certainly not to be forsaken. Keep from me, Lord, all those experiences which made Thee what Thou art! Then let me come and dwell with Thee and fully share Thy joy!"

Quick Sunday Thoughts

I'm totally beat and want to spend some time with my husband before bed, so I'll try to make this quick.

Nora did fabulous in Nursery today at church. I was lucky and today was the Visiting Teaching Conference during Relief Society and so all the men took over the women's jobs. This is good because Nora LOVES Dads, Grandpa's, or anyone who could be interpreted as such. It's so funny because whenever we are with friends and Paul isn't available, she will go up to the next available "Dad" and want him to hold her. Anyway, having all men in the nursery was great and she didn't even shed a tear. We'll see how it goes next week.

I was so excited to get some "spiritual upliftment". I went to Gospel Doctrine ready with my scriptures, handbook, pen and paper. It was a great lesson about repentance and the information was really great. The only problem is that now I have all this guilt about how much work I need to do spiritually. I really want to grow and come closer to the Lord, and I think sometimes the adversary picks up on what might deter us the most. For me, I feel busy, inadequate, and overwhelmed. It sometimes just seems like too much, and then you don't do ANYTHING! That has GOT TO CHANGE. I'm determined to start a new chapter in my life called "Obedience in the little things." I've never had a problem with the biggies. It's the daily tasks that I can easily incorporate if I just prioritize.

I'm sure most of you don't care at all about my spiritual growth, but I figure if I write it down and put it out there, then perhaps I will be accountable to more than just myself. I also wanted to remember some of the little lessons I learned from listening to Pres. Hinckley's remarks at the Tuesday devotional at BYU this week. (I listened via Internet) He AGAIN reiterated the importance of hard work. It was a great talk about the 13th article of faith and what it really means in our lives. I encourage anyone who has time to listen to it. You can find it at www.byub.org/devotionals/

One of my favorite quotes of his is, “Without hard work, nothing grows but weeds.”

Have a great week!!

Curse you Disney Channel and Nickelodeon

Do any of you have to endure the dreaded.......

"Mom, this one time on Hannah Montana (insert appropriate show here ie. Suite life of Zack and Cody, Drake and Josh, and the new iCarly)......." this is then followed by a detailed, yet not coherent, string of descriptions of an episode that the child somehow found to be funny enough to recount. I am sitting there having to pretend I care, and to listen, and then guess when the appropriate time is to say, "yea, that's funny" with all the enthusiasm I can muster.

This then is repeated several times a day. I promise I try to limit the T.V. time, but it's obviously not enough. I'm not ready for pre-teen shows.

DOES ANYONE FEEL MY PAIN?

St. George Marathon Update

Too Bad I won't have this cutie cheering me on! This was when I ran a half marathon in Wisconsin a couple of years ago!

What was I thinking?! Don't ever train for an October Marathon when you live in Arizona. It is my new mantra! The last few days have been the first sub 100 degree temps in months!! Saturday was our last long run before the big event October 6th 2007! The first 13 miles were actually great and I was feeling really good about myself. Then the sun came out and is was a miserable trek back to the car and civilization. It's not that I expected it to be easy, but knowing we have 26.2 to run in less than 3 weeks was making me hope I was a bit more prepared.

I am just going to have to accept the fact that I will be running....no walking....no crawling across the finish line with a time closer to 5 hours rather than the sub 4 I was hoping for. I also have to remind myself that the last time I ran this I was a decade younger. My training has been pathetic this time and my joints are having a hard time with all the down hills. Anyway, if your in Dixie over Conference weekend just mosey on over to the finish line once they have cleaned it all up and I'm sure you'll find me there in a heap on the side of the road.

She's quick!

Congrats to Celia on noticing that my "inmate" number was the same as Jean Valjean of Les Miserables! I thought I was being so creative and was happy to see someone noticed!!

Parent Police

Have you ever been scolded in public by another adult about being an irresponsible parent? I just was, and I have a few conflicting emotions running around in my head right now. First of all I am really embarrassed. Second, I’m a little angry. And lastly, I feel misunderstood. Let me set the scene for you.

I was picking up Ella from a friends house and pulled up into the driveway. I had the other three kids with me and knew that if I brought them all in it would cause a scene, and that Ella may never be invited over to this new friends house again. So, I left them in the car…..with it running (it’s 98 degrees outside so I wanted the air to be on). My plan is to ring the doorbell, say hello, gather Ella and be off. When the mother of the friend answered the door, the dog came running up and she obviously wanted to shut the door to keep it inside. This being the first time I had been to their house, I decided to step in quickly to not let the dog escape. Well, of course Ella did not want to leave and was taking FOREVER to pick up the game pieces, put on her shoes, and gather her backpack.

Just as I am about to turn around and open the door to leave we hear a knock. I thought it might be Jack (my worrier) wondering what was taking more than just a minute. NOPE, it was the neighbor from across the street with a very condescending look on her face holding up my keys. It took me a moment to figure out what was going on. She proceeded to say something like this, “They were climbing around, unbuckled and turning on the windshield wipers. I have actually seen kids drive cars across the street and crash. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO LEAVE KIDS IN A RUNNING CAR. (She said this part in a scolding tone with disgust on her face…hence the all caps).” I think I then mumbled something like, “Oh, uh, I’m sorry”. I seriously felt like I was in the third grade.

So, now that the shaking has almost subsided I’m trying to sort out how I really feel. OF COURSE she is right. It is not smart to leave the kids unattended in the car….even in the driveway. So, that makes me feel embarrassed and remorseful. Then my pride kicks in and says, “she doesn’t know the whole story and that it wasn’t my intention.” So, then I feel a little defensive and wanting to say something like, “you don’t know me, don’t judge me.” (very Jerry Springer…I know). If this was some random person I would probably get over it quicker, but she looks a little familiar and I think her kids go to the same school as mine. It is a small little charter school, and I’m sure I will be seeing her again.

This all being said, I’m looking for a little advice, validation, compassion, etc. Have you ever done anything like that? Do you ever feel misunderstood and judged? Am I crazy? Do you have any suggestions on what to do about the imminent encounter with this woman again? I’d love to hear ANY thoughts you have on the subject. I just had to get it out there so I could fee like I was doing something about it. Thanks for enduring my vent!!

Oh boy! I got joy!

Quick story! I blogged a few weeks ago about how I am doing Joy School this year with Max. Today was my first turn to teach. It was so much fun!! The kids are adorable and the curriculum is incredible. A lot of thought, research, and effort went into it. Well, to my surprise, when my cousin (in-law) Shawni dropped off her daughter Claire, who did she happen to have with her......her Mom......Linda Eyre......who along with her husband created Joy school! They were in town for some lecture they were giving ...of course. Boy was I glad that I had prepared for the days lesson! I will admit that I was a bit intimidated, but Shawni's parents are so great I'm sure they didn't even think about it. When she picked up Claire both her parents were with her (Dad Richard had joined them) and I was so glad that we had made some cute "nature" placemats for the kids to take home. I know it is so dumb that I would want to impress them, but I did. I am really in awe of them and their family and all the books they have written. If you don't know much about them check out their website at www.valuesparenting.com

Tuesday Tell All - Home Sweet Home

Well, now that I have a dull ache in my chest from all the nostalgia I guess I better write this thing. Marcie, Sally, be careful what you ask for. I figure this blog may have to serve as my family history some day, so this might be a long one.

This is a picture of the home where I grew up, in East Millcreek (Holiday) Utah. This is just as it was being finished (1975), the year I was born. It took several years to finish the landscaping and basement, but I love EVERYTHING about this house. Not because it was the most beautiful, or because of the "stuff" in it, but because this is where my whole childhood was spent. I lived in this house until I graduated from High School and went to BYU. (The dull ache has turned into tears streaming down my face) It will always be my home. Even now, when I drive by it, I get a tangible wave of emotion, and will never be able to call it anything but MY house. My parents sold it shortly after I graduated (I'm the youngest of six). Paul is sick of me crying every time I recount something about the house.
This is the house I built forts in with my brothers and friends. (nice shirt huh?!)

This is a view from the back yard. It was built on a gully, so our back lawn was actually lower than the basement. We had many wedding receptions back there, and it was ideal for exploring. This picture is me with one of my older brothers and sisters.

This is the home that we grew up doing the Nativity in. (I'm baby Jesus)

I included this picture because it shows the incredible view we had of Mt. Olympus from the kitchen, balcony, and dining room. There is NOTHING like it. I miss it SO MUCH!! During my Junior year in High School I lived in Washington D.C. for a semester and worked as a Senate Page. I had a picture that I took from my balcony of the mountain. Oh, and my Dad looks cute blowing out his candles!

This is me jumping off the back balcony into a pile of snow. With so many levels in the back yard there was always something to do. We often rode a sled from the balcony, to the patio, down to the grass, and then even further down to the gully. Good times!

This is our sand pile. On this occasion it seems we were trying to create a pool. We would have castle making contests often with the neighborhood kids. Once we cut the cable line while digging in it. You can't see in this photo, but there was a hammock tied to two trees in the background that I LOVED to snuggle into and take a nap. The other thing you can only see the edge of is a drinking fountain. I always thought that was SO COOL!

This is a picture of some of my family (I'm the small one on the far right!) around THE BEST KITCHEN TABLE IN THE WORLD! I'm trying to figure out how to emphasize that enough. I have actually been wanting to do a whole post on just this table. Because this picture does not do it justice, I will describe it. NO, it is not the most beautiful table in the world. It was round, with 8 seats that swiveled out and attached underneath. So, there were no legs on the seats.......nothing to move while vacuuming/mopping/sweeping etc. It also had a lazy susan where all the food and such was placed during mealtime so when you needed something, you just spun away!!! Wish I could find one for my table, but maybe when the kids are older because my brothers also liked to put me on top of it and spin away. They thought it was funny to watch me try to walk afterward. Many an item took flight on that ingenious little contraption. This table is the reason I was so adamant about wanting a round table. I LOVE the feel of everyone being together. You could really look at everyone, and we were all in on the conversation. Okay, enough of the table.

The next place I lived was in Provo, Utah at BYU!! I know Marcie will gasp, but I don't have any pictures of me other than inside my sweet dorm at Heritage Halls.
This picture is of me at my next home.....The Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies in Jerusalem, Israel. I was so lucky to be able to live and study there for six months in 1995. I can honestly say it was the best experience of my life. (other than being a wife and mother of course)

This is a picture of Paul and my basement apartment on Princeton Avenue in Salt Lake City, Utah. All you can see in this picture is the railing of the steps leading to our front door. It was a perfect little one bedroom for our first years of marriage. We moved in with my Grandma one street away on Harvard when she was needing extra help a couple of years later. We were there for only about 7 months before we moved to Kentucky.

This is our home in Kentucky. It is the first home we owned and we loved it SO MUCH! It was a 2 bed, 2 bath, and it was perfect. It is the home we lived in when both Ella and Jack were born. I could go on and on about Kentucky and the great experience we had there and the friends we made, but I will spare you.

This is our home in La Crosse, Wisconsin. I loved this house...even though it didn't have a dishwasher. We were in this home when Max and Nora were born. I LOVED the yellow. It made me happy each time I saw it. No comment on the yard sign.

This is one of the things I LOVED about La Crosse, and where we lived. The Elementary school was at the bottom of the street, and we would walk down there a lot to play on the playground, ride bikes, or fly kites. This is a picture of Ella and Jack running home from the park with the kite trailing behind them. I love this picture and I am now crying again.

I loved our backyard in Wisconsin. It would have been nice to use it more than a few months of the year. (Too freakin' cold in the LONG winter, and way too hot an humid in the dead of summer) We fenced it in and the grass would get so green. Our neighbors gave us their old swing set as their girls had long grown out of it. This is a picture of Ella sitting at her little picnic table painting. I was in the habit of sending them outside to to EVERYTHING if the weather was even a little bit reasonable.
So, now we are settled here in sunny Arizona. I don't have a good picture of the front of my house. I guess I should take one. I LOVE our back yard and there is so much to do. Yes, it is sweltering here 4 months of the year, but that's where the pool comes in handy. The other 8 months are awesome, and the kids love to play outside. I am happy here and have felt blessed to truly love everywhere I have lived for all it has offered me and my family. I guess that's why they say Home is a feeling, not a place.

Hallelujah

Next Sunday Nora will be old enough for Nursery!!!

Many of you understand my joy. For those who don't, in my church, our Sunday meetings are three hours long. For two of those hours all children ages 18 months and older are part of Primary. from 18 months - 3 years old they go to Nursery and play, snack, sing, and have short lessons about Christ. Those 3 years and older go to Sunday School and have their individual lessons about the gospel.

Anyway, Having to deal with a child who is younger than 18 months for the two hours of Sunday School is......well.......let's see.......what's the most appropriate phrase here.......HELL!! I can say that right? Perhaps there is a lesson in there somewhere! I am well aware that not all kids are as busy, loud, curious, active, demanding, etc. as mine are, but I do know that ALMOST all parents look forward to the day they can go to their meetings/lessons in peace knowing the kids are taken care of. Next week I will go to my other meetings completely BY MYSELF for the first time in 7 1/2 years. I was always pregnant with the next one by the time my "baby" could go to nursery. So, as I enter this new phase of my spiritual life I say......HALLELUJAH!!

They Notice.....

Last night while cuddling with Ella at bedtime I was reminded of an important lesson.

Phone rings...........I keep scratching her back and stroking her hair.
(Paul was on call and gone)
A few seconds after the phone stops ringing:
Ella: "When I'm a Mom and cuddling with my kids I'm not going to answer the phone either."
Me: "I'd much rather cuddle with you than answer the phone."
Ella: "Yea, kids are much more important than the phone."
Me: (with tears streaming down my face - she couldn't see) "Much more important."

Playlist options

Due to mixed reviews on my blog music, I have changed it so that you HAVE TO turn it on by clicking play. It will no longer start automatically. I guess I shouldn't force my music tastes on you. Some people really liked it, so I will leave it up for you to listen if you choose!

Tell all Tuesday.....Favorite Teacher or Class

This may sound cheesy, but by far my favorite/best teacher was/is my Mother. She was formally educated as a teacher and taught for several years, but that could never compare to the teaching that was done in our home.

She taught me the most important lessons in life. She taught me how to treat people. My Mom is loving, friendly, engaging, and always willing to help people.
I may have mentioned before how growing up it always seemed we had someone other than immediate family living with us. We had several exchange students, relatives, refugees, unwed mothers, and complete strangers in and out of our home.
She treats everyone with respect and can probably remember the name of everyone she has ever met. My Mom makes everyone feel like her friend, and truly considers all people she interacts with as such. I find myself striking up conversation with people I am in line with at the store, airport, etc. That is just like my Mother. She is always genuinely interested in the person she is talking to. I wish I was like her in more ways that just being a "talker".
My Mom (and Dad of course) taught us that experiences are more important than things. My parents worked hard to get us experiences in life that would teach us forever, rather than buy us things that wouldn't last. I was able to be in commercials, print ads, movies, serve as a Senate Page in Washington D.C. for a semester in High School, go on Study Abroad, and many other things because of my Mothers diligence in seeking out opportunities.
We had weekly "family council" and I was pretty much in charge of buying all my wants by age 12. I was 14 when I got my first "real" job other than babysitting. My Mom always made me feel capable and let me figure things out for myself.
I was always encouraged to speak my mind, and respect others for their different opinions. This has served me well in the sense that I LOVE people who are different from me. I have to remember sometimes though that not all people are so eager to hear opinions that are different from theirs. I'm sure I've offended people (unintentionally) by my eagerness to engage in what I consider stimulating conversation.
I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Here are some real pictures to enjoy!
This is the first time my older sisters saw me in the Hospital right after I was born. I LOVE this picture. We are all gazing so intently at each other. My Mom made us feel so special and like we could do ANYTHING.
This picture was taken at girls camp when I was in High School. We had all braided our hair and my Mom was such a good sport she let us try to braid her very short hair. This too is one of my favorite pictures because this is how my my Mom ALWAYS looks at me. (or at least that how I feel)
I still have so much to learn about life, being a mother, and a good person, but the lessons my Mother taught me have given me the best foundation anyone could ask for.
There are many things we learn in school and throughout life, but the lessons taught to me by my Mother are the ones that endure forever.

This speaks for itself....and for all Moms!

Hannah Montana Party Update

I posted a few weeks ago about the cutest invitation Ella got to a Hannah Montana birthday party. Well the other day the mother of the birthday girl dropped off this little party favor!!! Click pictures to enlarge!

WOW!!!! They had taken the girls to a real recording studio and had them record "The Best of Both worlds". This is the CD. I wish I could figure out a way to upload the mp3 of it for you to listen to here, but I'm not that blogger savvy. If anyone knows how please comment! They also got "rock star" shirts and autographed them for each other. Ella had a great time. I can't believe the time and energy that must have gone into the party let alone the invitations and subsequent CD party favor!! What happened to the days of red rover, lawn games, and clowns? I'm glad they had fun and thought you might enjoy seeing what they came up with!
