I'm just wondering...

BEFORE:

AFTER:

How am I supposed to feel when I come home from getting a haircut and my 5 year old greets me with, "what happened to your hair?" Then the 3 year old says, "Mom, why is your hair crazy?" The kicker was when all my husband said after that was, "Do you like it?" (say it to yourself putting the emphasis on the word like).

Ya, that's what I thought too. I'm trying to feel O.K. about it...I mean I really don't have a fragile ego. I'm just sayin'...

Sin City - aka Salt Lake City?

This article has ranked Salt Lake City, Utah (my hometown) as one of the most sinful cities. It was VERY interesting to me. Of course there is a lot of subjective data and you have to take it all with a grain of salt, but is there some truth to it?

For all my fellow Mormons out there you may be interested to compare this article with these words from Heber C. Kimball:

An army of Elders will be sent to the four quarters of the earth to search out the righteous and warn the wicked of what is coming. All kinds of religions will be started and miracles performed that will deceive the very elect if that were possible. Our sons and daughters must live pure lives so as to be prepared for what is coming.

After a while the Gentiles will gather by the thousands to this place, and Salt Lake City will be classed among the wicked cities of the world. A spirit of speculation and extravagance will take possession of the Saints, and the results will be financial bondage.

Persecution comes next and all true Latter-day Saints will be tested to the limit. Many will apostatize and others will be still not knowing what to do. Darkness will cover the earth and gross darkness the minds of the people. The judgments of God will be poured out on the wicked to the extent that our Elders from far and near will be called home, or in other words the gospel will be taken from the Gentiles and later on carried to the Jews.

Before that day comes, however, the Saints will be put to a test that will try the integrity of the best of them. The pressure will become so great that the more righteous among them will cry unto the Lord day and night until deliverance comes.

—Heber C. Kimball, First Counselor in the First Presidency, May 1868, in Deseret News, 23 May 1931; see also Conference Report, Oct. 1930, p. 58–59

So So Funny!!

Book review and random rantings!

I finished this book last week, and have had a hard time getting the characters out of my head. For me that's a sign of a good book. I'm sure I'm one of the last people on the planet to have read this, but it was worth the wait. I had so many thoughts running around in my head while reading. The biggest was, "how in the world can people be treated this way in the name of God/Allah or whatever?" Unfortunately I'm sure there are much worse TRUE stories out there and this is modern day. How could anyone believe that acts that degrade another human soul are condoned by God?

Of course I am profoundly dedicated to my faith, but I know of so many others that preach love, peace, uplifting of your fellow men, goodness, kindness, mercy, etc. I truly believe that "by their fruits ye shall know them." Fruits, being actions, that speak much louder than words. In my faith I have always felt cherished. I cannot tell how many times I hear leaders of my faith encourage and uplift women. I was always taught to get educated, go out and experience life, and believe that I can accomplish anything. The roles of men and women are often different, but guess what...we are different! Thank goodness. I am so grateful for the experiences I have had with dear friends of different faiths that have always been there to encourage and uplift me. I have been sad at many of the media reports that have shed my faith in an unflattering light. I'm grateful for my friends of these different faiths that have accepted me by my "fruits" and not judged me by what they may have "heard" from biased and judgmental sources.

Am I getting off on a tangent? Of course I am...that's me. But the point is that this book really made me think of all of us as children of our Heavenly Father. We may be in different circumstances in life, but we all have hopes, dreams, and love to share. We all need love and respect. We all love our children and have heartbreaks in life. Hopefully we can all come to see each other as more the same than anything else.

My brother just gave me a copy of the book Escape. It is about a woman who escaped the clutches of the polygamist clan ran by Warren Jeffs. Coming on the heels of the above book that also revealed a culture where women were oppressed and thought of as "less than," I'm not sure if I'm ready for it. I'm sure it will make me SO MAD!!! Especially because so many people still believe that they are affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Of course the media hasn't helped with that one either as they reported about them in front of the Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah?!! Sorry, but in my humble opinion Anderson Cooper is no genius. Just because he's easy on the eyes doesn't make him a great news man. Lately when I listen to him I laugh more than anything else. It does make me realize that I can't judge all of Islam by the radical faction. Again, I'm on a tangent.

So, what I started to write about was that I LOVED this book, and that I'm so grateful for a family and a faith that has always made me feel like the sky's the limit...and that I'm worth it. Thanks for enduring my random thoughts.

No Drug Rehab ect...

This is the first time I have contributed to Kara’s Blog; however, I do on occasion read the posts. It is always fun to see what our friends and families are doing. A little clarification on Kara’s recent post in which she talks about me, “being back...and going through difficult times”. The cocaine and kitty porn parties were the hardest habit to break. The IV Fentanyl, crushable Oxycontin were not that tuff to kick after the “shakes, convulsions, vomiting, and bad trips”, I did just fine.

I'm glad I cleared that up! The reality is that after the completion of any surgical residency if you want to be considered a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon then you must pass two board tests. The first is a written one (taken and passed last year), after which you have three years to then prepare and take the oral examination. I figured there is no time like the present and took the exams in back to back years, thus the “difficult times”, and stress over the last 6 weeks. The oral exam was completed in Dallas on V-Tines day. I do appreciate Kara and the kids for giving me time to study after work and on weekends. Kara took over MY daily jobs of: doing the laundry, dishes, vacuuming, cleaning the bathrooms, and cooking. Kara is the best, and yes I did get “Lucky” on Valentines day. In case you were wondering...I have returned to my above mentioned cleaning and cooking duties.

Sunday Stew - with a new ingredient -video.

How thrilled do I look to be cooking? But don't you love my apron? My MIL gave this to me for Christmas and it is my new after Church Sunday attire. Thanks so much Mary for such a fun, cute, thoughtful handmade gift!

So, this year Paul brought home flowers for all his girls for Valentines. (a couple days early) Sorry no picture of me with mine. The girls loved them, and it was so cute to see their reactions. Paul gave me the cutest little book that the kids wrote little notes to me in. He also gave me a Lucy gift card that I can't wait to spend. He was going to be out of town until really late Valentines night, but he hopped an early flight and walked in around 10:00pm. It was great and we got to spend the last couple of hours of Valentines together.

I know I don't talk about Paul a lot on this blog, but he is a really private person. I'm not sure how he would react to me putting things out there for the whole world to see, so I try to respect him. I do want everyone out there to know what a great guy he is. If you had any idea what he has been through the past couple of months (again, he's private so I won't say what), you would be so amazed and impressed at his willpower, dedication, self-discipline, etc. All I can say right now is that we are SO GLAD IT IS OVER!!! We love you so much babe and are so happy to have you BACK!

Okay, so I just read through that last paragraph and it totally sounds like he was in rehab or something. That is NOT the case...not even close. Next ingredient...

Here is the evolution of Max and his new birthday bike. The pictures tell the story quite well. His birthday isn't for two more weeks, but Daddy had the time to take him to choose his bike yesterday and we took advantage. He is so excited and I love that the weather is so good for it.

Last but not least, the big news of the week is that Ella got her ears pierced yesterday. She has been begging for it since Kindergarten and I just always said, "someday." I think I said when your 12 once, but I must have said 8 too because she had it in her head that it would happen when she was 8. This has turned into the focus of turning 8 instead of her baptism, so I figured it wasn't really that big of a deal and that we should go ahead and get it done now. She was SO DANG CUTE about it. I could tell on the drive (just the two of us...again, SO GLAD to have Daddy back) she was getting nervous. I told her that when we got there that if she changed her mind that was just fine.

So we get there and she chooses the plain little diamond studs. PERFECT! So, the worker comes over. As you can see from the pictures, she wasn't really striking any confidence in the mother of this precious girl who was going to permanently put holes in her ears!!! WHAT WAS I DOING?! She was actually a really nice girl and was great with Ella. She was very non-chalant and acted like it was no big deal...just what Ella needed. Ella was a champ, and is now over the moon about her new pierced ears. I think it looks really cute. So, this begs the quesiton...What is the big deal about pierced ears? Why did I want her to wait until she was 18? Why does it have to be such a big issue of deciding an appropriate age? I can see all sides of this argument and personally decided that it really isn't that big of a deal. We made Ella promise on film that this was her only piercings she would EVER GET. You can view it below.

Don't you love my nice loud demanding voice in the background? I better not always sound that way! So there you have it. Another Sunday Stew in the tank!

I'd like to think so...

Take this test!

You're green, the color of growth and vigor. Good-hearted and giving, you have a knack for finding and bringing out the best in people. Green is the most down-to-earth color in the spectrum — reliable and trustworthy. People know they can count on you to be around in times of need, since your concern for people is genuine and sincere. You take pride in being a good friend. For you, success is measured in terms of personal achievement and growth, not by status or position. Rare as emeralds, greens are wonderful, natural people. It truly is your color!

Sunday Stew on Tuesday...you know...like leftovers...YUM!!

So I was out of town on Saturday and Sunday, so I was a little behind on the Sunday Stew anyway. Then, Blogger has decided to make me pay for more storage or no more uploading pics! On top of that...once I paid for the extra storage, Google took it's sweet time to post the payment and allow me to start uploading again.

*ADVICE*
If you are taking pictures with a fairly high quality camera...compress the images before uploading to Blogger or you too will have to pay for more storage. Thanks to my brilliant brother in law Colin, I now know how to do that. Another bonus of compressing my pics is that they upload SO MUCH FASTER!!!

Now, back to the stew.
So, I've made it no secret that I've been a little stressed lately. Well, turns out I've got an ulcer. LOVELY! I have always carried my stress more physically than emotionally, but nothing like this. I've had headaches, neck and shoulder tightness, heartburn, and trouble sleeping throughout the years during times of stress. Now it has started to affect me emotionally too. I used to be the picture of happiness and optimism, and that has been lost a little somewhere along the way. I guess the ulcer just confirms what I've known for quite some time now...I am under a tremendous amount of stress these days. I'm sure a lot of it is self-inflicted, but it is very real to me. So, hopefully things will improve soon, and I can be back to my happy sunny self.
Yes, the kids have been driving me crazy, buy I promise I haven't resorted to this yet. Nora's new thing is to climb into Maggie's crate and hang out. I will admit it cracks me up, then grosses me out. Luckily I wash Maggie's mat and blanket a few times a week.
The other day as the madness of the day was reaching a fever pitch, I looked out the window and saw this lovely rainbow. It had been raining for a couple of days and it just looked so beautiful. The picture really doesn't do it any justice. I had to call all the kids over to see it, and they were just as entranced. Isn't the world amazingly beautiful?
So these pictures pretty much describe the state of my house, my children, and my life right now! Nora continues to disrobe, the boys continue to wrestle any chance they get, the laundry continues to pile up, and the house continues to get messy despite my best efforts. Go figure!
Ella and I were able to take a quick...I mean quick trip to Utah over the weekend. We were in Utah for about 48 hours. We went to be there for my niece Romey's baptism. She is Ella's best little friend/cousin, and these girls can't get enough of each other. It's so fun to see them smiling and giggling all the time. I am so mad at myself for not taking pictures, but we sure had a great time. This picture of Ella and the snowman was the only one I snapped all weekend! She could not get enough of the snow and made this snowman in about 15 minutes in my sister's back yard.

This was taken in Rome this past November.
I must say that my SIL Sue and her husband Ryan are some of my favorite people EVER!! I was continually amazed at how they live their lives. They are such good people with their values completely in order...and their house! I'm sure the fact that every drawer, closet and cabinet I opened was meticulously organized didn't do well for my guilt, let alone my stomach issues. I can't believe how much they can accomplish, and still be the fun loving, warm people they are. I'm so glad we are related. It does make me sad that we live so far away though.
I was so glad that my other SIL (Paul and Ryan's sis) Jenny was able to be there and have a little sleepover with us. We have been friends since high school, (more about that coming in another post) and I feel so lucky to be her SIL. I've learned so much from Jenny throughout the years and feel so blessed that she is in my life. I wish we talked/saw each other more, but life is busy. I sure love you Jenny.

I was also able to quickly see my parents and head to our most favorite restaurant the Cowboy Grub...love that place. We stayed with my sister Heather the first night there and she was...as always...ready with some good advice. She always makes me feel better about myself. She is so great at putting things into perspective for me. I need to see her more. I guess you can see that's a pattern with my relatives.

We are home now and life is as crazy as ever. Well, sorry about the leftovers...it really is about that dull this week isn't it. I'll have to add a little spice to the recipe next Sunday.

Blog Changes

So, you may have noticed I have been trying to make my blog look more exciting. How is it going you ask? Not so good. I changed the background and lost ALL my sidebar info. I added back some of the items and wasn't going to add a friends/family list because I read blogs through google reader now. Then I realized that my friends who have private blogs don't work with Google reader. In order to have a quick easy link to their blogs I put them on my sidebar. Then I decided to add family. Finally I just decided to add everyone back. I haven't gotten everyone back on there because I realized that I actually had children to take care of and a house to keep in order...imagine that. My point is...

PLEASE DON'T BE OFFENDED if you are not on my list. Rest assured that if you were on my list that you are on my Google reader subscription and I am getting updated if you have posted. Someday my blog sidebar might make it to the top of my priority list, but it's just not there now. If you want to be on my list let me know. Same goes for if you want me to take you off my list. I totally understand if you don't want my readers to randomly click on your blog.
Gracias!

The First Presidency

Although President Hinckley is undoubtedly a tough act to follow, I have complete faith that the Lord is the head of this church and that the leaders are divinely inspired. I am excited to see this new presidency in action.

Losing it!!

This picture could not sum it up better!! This was me 5 minutes ago. The three year old really was running around scaring the dog with a toy gun, the baby had AGAIN taken off every piece of clothing, drinks were spilled, phones went unanswered, and this is all minus the two older ones!!! I need to admit that not only do I not have a handle on my life, it is completely OUT OF CONTROL!!! I started crying last night while making sandwiches for the kids for dinner. I don't know why it came out when it did, but the flood gates opened and I couldn't stop it. I felt bad for the kids because I didn't want them to see me do that, but I had HAD IT! I guess it was better than yelling and hitting.

I feel like every morning I'm dropping the kids off at school with a scolding about why do I have to tell them a thousand times to get dressed, brush hair, get their shoes on, get their backpacks!!! I hate that it seems like that is their impression of me for the school day. I really think I'm seriously losing it. I need to get some order back into my life or I'm afraid my poor family will suffer.

I need to :

  • house break the dang dog....arghhhhh!! It seriously is driving me insane!!
  • organize my files....again.
  • organize all my primary stuff.
  • clean the whole house...top to bottom...I mean deep clean.
  • throw away a ton of crap.
  • exercise would be nice.
  • figure out how to meal plan.
  • figure out how to effectively discipline.
  • finish the 20 baby gifts I am behind on...yes 20 (in the past 6 months or so).
  • buy valentines for the kids...notice I didn't say make!
  • patience, patience, patience.
  • gentle, gentle, gentle.
  • laundry, laundry, laundry.
You get the picture.

Sorry about the depressing post, but I needed to get a few things out. Hopefully it will be a better day. I'll keep you updated.

Yup! I'm Talking Politics

I don't even know where to start. The debacle in West Virginia? No. The sick sinking feeling in my gut? No. I think I'll just send you to the person who said it best...Erika. I have never been good with words and when I try, they never quite come out the way I want them to. If you want to know how I feel politically then read this post. Let me know what you think. I have a deep love of this country. I also have great faith in the people of this country. Perhaps I can get my mind off it today after staying up until 2-3 am wathching and fretting about this whole deal. Am I crazy?

HInckley Challenge

If you are interested in giving yourself a spiritual boost, whatever religion you may be... I suggest this challenge.

President Gordon B. Hinckley on the Book of Mormon "I take in my hand the Book of Mormon. I read its words. I have read Joseph Smith's explanation of how it came to be. To the unbelieving it is a story difficult to accept, and critics for generations have worn out their lives writing books intended to refute that story and to offer other explanations than the one given by Joseph the Prophet. But to the open-minded, this critical writing has only stimulated them to dig deeper; and the more deeply they dig, the greater the accumulation of evidence for the validity of Joseph Smith's story. Still, as has been demonstrated for a hundred and fifty years, the truth of the Book of Mormon will not be determined by literary analysis or by scientific research, although these continue to be reassuring. The truth about the origins of the Book of Mormon will be determined today and tomorrow, as it has been throughout the yesterdays, by reading the book in a spirit of reverence and respect and prayer."
( "Praise to the Man," Ensign, Aug. 1983, 4)

I will be tracking my progress on my sidebar!! Happy reading!

Oh, and one more...

See how imperfect I am!!! I can't remember a thing!! Anyway, I went to my beloved Trader Joe's yesterday, came home, and completely forgot the groceries in the car. I woke up this morning realizing that all my frozen organic berries, corn and broccoli were finished. BRILLIANT! Luckily I hadn't bought too many perishables and most of the lot was saved. Now I have a beautiful berry colored stain in the back of the van where they defrosted and promptly leaked through the paper bag.Jack was assigned the scripture and talk in Primary today. I stayed home with the two sick ones, and sent Ella and Jack with some friends. Of course I completely forgot about Jack's assignment and the neighbor had to step in and improvise. I am the 1st counselor in the Primary by the way! I'm sure they are all feeling really confident about that decision about now!! Luckily Jack says awesome prayers, so I'm sure he did great.

I think thats it for now. I'm sure I'll have many more antics to report next week!!

I forgot a couple of things...

I wanted to mention my brilliant SIL Sue and her perfectly imperfect post from last week. It was genius and I really think all bloggers should read it. You can find it here. I'm glad that I have several blog friends that really "keep it real." I'd like to think that I do an O.K. job of that myself, but in honor of the post I thought I'd better post this.

I often make flattering faces like this...

This beautiful snaggle-tooth girl took this picture of...

this not so beautiful, semi snaggle-toothed girl. I really did go to Wal-mart looking like this!! First of all, I had sick kids and was not getting anything done, and second of all...it was Wal-mart!! I should have posted a close up of my face, but I'm not ready to get that real yet!! Did I mention I wasn't wearing a bra? Not really a problem since there's not much there to support!
So, here's to taking and posting more of the "real" pictures and happenings of life. Thanks Sue for the reminder that we are all more real than we appear on our blogs.

Super Bowl Sunday Stew

I have to start out by saying that the fact the Green Bay Packers aren't in the Super Bowl this year is a MAJOR bummer! That was a total heart breaker, but I guess I'll survive...especially if Brett Favre comes back for one more year!! I love him!! I guess Tom Brady's not too hard to watch either.

It is kinda fun knowing that it's going on just the other side of this valley. Good for the AZ economy! Do you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday? I won't be because Paul is out of town and I have sick kids to tend to, but I'm torn on this issue. I make NO judgments about what people choose to do. I can see how it is a great family event that makes for good memories, but I also respect that some people choose to spend Sundays a different way. If your not too shy I'd love to hear what you do!

I had talked to my Mom this week on the phone and she was telling me some of the other memories she had of the prophet and we were just laughing at his quick whit and humor.

I guess my parents were in Sharon, Vermont during the celebration of 200 years since Joseph Smiths birth in late 2005. When President Hinckley was walking up to the stage he walked past my parents and then stopped and turned to them and said, "what are you doing here?" With all the people that he knew and associated with, they were shocked that he would stop and recognize them and realize that they were out of place. (usually being in Salt Lake City)

She also told me about a time when my Dad was in the Stake Presidency of the Stake that President Hinckley was the former Stake President of, and he had come to visit for some reason. As he sat on the stand near my Dad they waited for the choir members to come up to sing a song. He turned to my Dad and said, "they don't look to happy about coming up here!" I'm sure they were filled with great anxiety knowing they were to be singing in front of the prophet. I would be!

I just wanted to write those down really for my own benefit, and my posterity. I sat transfixed watching the funeral services and documentaries of President Hinckley. It was such an uplifting and heartfelt service. It really made me want to rededicate myself to "stand a little taller, try a little harder." It also made me want to humble myself more and be kinder to my children. My word for the year, GENTLE, was ringing through my head like a gong all day!! He epitomized the kind of GENTLE I want to become.

I have to document one of the most tender experiences Paul and I have ever had. The night the Prophet died Paul took the kids upstairs and told them the news. They had a lot of questions, but were optimistic that he was in a better place and that they would see him again. Several minutes later after Paul was coming out of Nora's room from putting her to bed, he saw Jack in the bathroom with his arms folded and leaning against the counter. He waited for him to finish and asked him what he was doing. He told Paul with tears in his eyes that he was praying for President Hinckley and that he would be resurrected. He is THE SWEETEST boy!! When I was tucking him in he asked me why President Hinckley was the prophet. I told him it was because he was kind to everyone, because his listened to Heavenly Father, and because he was a good man. He turned to me and said, "I think I can be a man like that." I told him that I knew he could. I'm glad it was dark in the room because tears were streaming down my face. I'm sure my kids wonder why I cry so much when I'm not sad!

This beautiful Nora Jayne is turning into quite the pill!! She knows what she wants and will tell you! Paul cracks up how she always says, "Daddy Stop!"

Here she is with her new staple...the rain boots! At least they match the backpack! As you can see she still prefers the diaper alone with no pants. This photo also gives a nice view of the mullett!

Maggie got spayed this last week so now she has to wear this! Ella was so sad about her surgery and was very apprehensive about taking her in. She doesn't really get why she had to have it and we just told her it will make her healthier and live longer. After we picked her up and she was whining and groggy, Ella started crying and said, "I'd rather go to the doctor than see Maggie like this." It was so sweet. I love that girl.

We went to our friends the Oswald's house Friday night for some 4 wheeling, pizza, and cookies! It was so much fun and the kids couldn't get enough of the quads. I love this first picture because of Paul's big smile. I wish I saw it more often. Max was chasing Paul and the girls, and wore himself right out!

Here is Morris showing Jack the ropes. Ella was so excited to be able to ride it herself after a quick lesson from Morris. It was one of those nights where friends call late in the day, you grab pizza on the way over, and it turns out to be a great night. Sometimes it works out better that way. I have a few friends here that I've been meaning to get together with for so long and never seem to be able to "plan" it!

Paul left this morning for a week long review course outside of D.C. I wish I could be there because I love that area of the country. I hope sometime in the not so distant future we can take the kids there and inspire them with a love of this wonderful country. Anyway, Paul left this cute not with treats for the kids to find this morning since he left so early. I loved how Nora was reaching for them from the moment she saw them. She has a sweet tooth that is going to be a tough one to reign in I'm afraid. Takes after Daddy!!

I also wanted to wish my wonderful friend Erika Happy Birthday! We went to lunch with some friends yesterday to celebrate and I was so mad I didn't bring my camera! Then I realized when I got home that we didn't even buy her lunch!!! ARGHHHH! What were we thinking?! We were all just so engrossed in the conversation that we didn't even think about it. Sorry Erika!! I'll make it up to you! She is such an awesome girl and I'm so glad we've become friends since I moved here.

My dear friend Sally had her baby on Friday a few weeks early. Because of various reasons they did a scheduled C-section. Things started fine, but baby Indie ended up being transferred to a different hospital and put on a ventilator. She is now off the ventilator and slowly improving. We love these guys so much and have them in our thoughts and prayers. I can't wait to meet little Indie Grace. Congratulations guys!!

Last but not least, I'm hoping everyone goes out to vote on Tuesday if they live in a Super Tuesday State!! It is the #1 thing on my agenda. I LOVE to vote and feel like I'm doing my part! Have a great week if I don't post again until the next Sunday Stew...which is likely!
