Here's a "shut-up" story for you (just think of Elaine on Seinfield)

My mom sent me a copy of what she had written about something that happened to them recently when returning home from a night out. I thought many of you may find it interesting, shocking, scary, and unbelievable! Here it goes:

We Live in a Secure Building

We live in a secure building …sometimes I’ve said it’s too secure, because it seems to be so much trouble to get in, that our children don’t ever come to see us here.

One quiet winter evening, on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, Stuart and I returned home from an outing about 9:30 P.M. and as usual, Stuart dropped me off at the 3rd floor while he went up to the 4th floor to retrieve our mail. Since we live in such a secure building, needing a magnetic key to enter from the outside, and living on the 3rd floor, we usually leave the door to our unit unlocked. As I tried to enter our unit, I couldn’t open the door wider than about a foot, and something seemed to be blocking the entryway. As I tried again, I looked down and was immediately startled and pulled back. There in the dark, on the kitchen floor, blocking my way was a young girl…limp and looking lifeless. Shocked, I pulled the door back and looked at the door number to make sure I was really at my own unit. Yes, I was at 308. I opened the door again and the girl stirred slightly. At least she wasn’t dead!

“Are you alright”, I stammered? Thinking at first that it might be the young maid who cleans our building, I asked, “Where are you supposed to be?”

She looked up at me with groggy eyes and groaned, then pushed our door shut. I was shaking as I went to meet Stuart at the elevator door just around the corner. I told him what I had discovered, and we went back to our door and once again tried to open it. Now it was locked from the inside! “She’s got to still be in there, and she’s locked the door !” I said, “ I have been here in the hall by the elevator and no one has come out and it’s only been a couple of minutes since she closed the door.” Cautiously, Stuart unlocked our door and we entered the unit and flipped on the light. The girl was no longer on the floor and the rest of our apartment was dark. Not even thinking that someone else might be in the apartment, we went searching through every room. She obviously wasn’t in the kitchen or living room, Stuart checked the study, and the laundry room…not there. I checked the master bedroom, bathroom and closet, and then met Stuart back in our hallway to check the other bedroom. We couldn’t see her in the closet or on the other side of the bed – not even under the bed, but the mattress itself was askew about a foot and it looked like someone was or had been sleeping in the bed. Stuart pulled back the bedspread… discovering only bunched up covers. Then, he lifted the mattress to adjust it back onto the box springs, when out came a leg!

Stuart gasped and jumped back. As he caught his breath, we lifted the mattress and discovered the girl between the mattress and the box springs! She was lying there still as a corpse. She had no shoes and her unmatched clothing was on inside out. Her hair was straggly around her face and she was pale as a ghost. I called to her, shaking her slightly and saying, “wake up, are you okay?” I could see she was a young teenager and called to her again, this time saying, “Honey, you’ve got to get up, let us help you.” She stirred and I got her sitting up on the bed. She looked both groggy and frightened, and then started to cry. I led her out to the hallway in our apartment where Stuart put his arm around her and she leaned into him and continued to cry. I put the mattress back in place, and then helped Stuart lead her to the couch in the front room. We tried to find out where she was supposed to be and where she thought she was. Now I could smell the alcohol on her breath and knew she was in no condition to think rationally. She called out, “I promise I won’t hurt you…I promise.” Interestingly enough, I had never thought that she might hurt us, and told her, “we won’t hurt you either, and we just want to find out where you need to be.” She said she was there to visit her sister and brother in law who lived on the 1st floor. She gave us their names and we tried to lead her out the door. “I’ll be in so much trouble,” she said, ‘Don’t call the police, I promise I won’t hurt you.” She continued to cry and staggered out with us to the elevator where we proceeded to the 1st floor.

As we got out of the elevator, our friend, Bob was at his storage unit working, so we asked him if he recognized or knew this girl, and told him the name of the sister she was looking for. He didn’t know either of them, but looked in his directory for the name she had given us. No one by that name was listed in our building. She insisted her sister lived there, so we decided to knock on every door on the first floor. As we went to the first unit to knock, the girl once again panicked and said, “Don’t knock…I’ll be in so much trouble.” I had let go of her arm, and suddenly she bolted, and ran down the hall. I turned to follow her, but didn’t run. By the time I got down the hall, turned and gone down the second hall, she was gone. There was a doorway leading to the stairs and it was shut. I walked back to Stuart and Bob, and they suggested we just go back to our apartment, check for damage and lock the door.

After getting back upstairs, we checked and could tell nothing had been taken or damaged in the apartment, but I was not content to let things stand as they were…really I was most concerned about the girl and wondered what we should do about her. It was a freezing cold winter night…what if she had run outside and now couldn’t get back in where it was warm. What if she were not only drunk, but on drugs and needed something more than sleep to recuperate? How did she get in the building? Who was responsible for her? Should we warn our neighbors and even have them help us look for her? Should we just call the police? Finally I called back downstairs to Bob and he let me know that the girl had returned to their unit, thinking it was her sister’s place. Bob was taking more things to his storage unit, and his wife had been on the phone. Somehow the girl got the notion that Bob was holding his wife hostage and she was calling for help. The girl got frantic when Bob came back to “help” again. Once again she bolted, and Bob couldn’t find her. I decided I needed to tell other neighbors and get some help, and went to leave, when our phone rang. It was another one of our neighbors who said the police were here and wanted to talk to us.

When the police came up to our unit, they were with a few of our neighbors who had apparently heard about the trouble. Soon a young couple also showed up that identified themselves as the girl’s sister and brother in law. They are the ones who called the police. We told the police our story, and they let us know that they knew the girl and had dealt with her before. “She is only 17 years old and has some mental problems,” they said. The sister added that the girl is bi-polar, and is border line schizophrenic.” She is on drugs and of course tonight was drunk as well. They ask if any damage was done and how we were. We told them that we didn’t want to cause further problems for anyone and simply wanted to see that the girl got the help she needed. They all thanked us, told us that they had found the girl asleep on a couch in the clubhouse and had now sent her to the psyche ward at the University Hospital.

Her sister and brother in law apologized and thanked us and went back to their unit. (Which was on the 4th floor, which is the main entry from the east side of the building, which makes it seem like the first floor.) They had just moved in two weeks ago, and therefore weren’t in the directory, nor did they know very many people. The young girl had come to tend for her sister!!! (We didn’t know what condition the girl was in when she came to tend, nor where she got the alcohol that got her drunk, but at least we knew the girl was now in a safe environment.) I kept thinking to myself…what if we had gone to bed not knowing she was between the mattress and the box springs!!! What would we have found the next time we changed the sheets?

Even though we “complain” that we live in a building that is sometimes “too secure”… I think we’ll keep our unit door locked from now on!

Happy Birthday to Me!! (March 3rd)

(Sing this to the Happy Birthday song)

Happy Birthday to Me
I'm now thirty three
I have such a blessed life
And here's why, you'll see!

33 Reasons I LOVE my life!!

1. Paul - he is so supportive and encourages me in all my crazy pursuits (marathons, school, etc.).

2. Ella - my "sunshine girl." She is SO GOOD! Her smile and personality are a joy.

3. Jack - my tender hearted boy. I am amazed daily by this kid. I don't deserve him.

4. Max - my tornado. He has so much energy and interest. I love seeing the world through his eyes.

5. Nora - my baby girl. I am determined to keep her from growing up. She's so girlie, fun and sassy.

6. My parents and siblings - words can't even describe how much I love them. My childhood was a gift.

7. My in-laws - marriage has brought so many wonderful people into my life and the life of my siblings. I'm so glad we don't have to be born into the same families to be related.

8. Great friends - I've always been blessed with great friends who inspire me and make me want to be better. That is no exception here. I had such wonderful, thoughtful gifts, calls, notes, and events from friends that made my day!

9. Good books - I love "experiencing" things through others eyes. I hope it has made me a more aware and compassionate person.

10. Our hot tub - there is nothing like heat, ice-water, and good conversation to make me happy!

11. Good health - I am in better shape now than I ever was in High school.

12. The older I get the less I care about what people think about me. That's scary since I think I've always been pretty good about that. At this rate, I'm going to be like those sassy grandma's who just say it like it is when I'm in my 40's.

13. I have a Mac, and thanks to Paul I now have an iphone (for my b-day). YEA!!!

14. Freedom - As I get older I realize more and more how grateful I am for the blessing of living in America. I love the constitution and truly believe it was an inspired document written by inspired men.

15. It was 78 degrees today, the trees are blossoming, and I've taken my kids to the park 3 times a week for the last month.

16. DVR - It actually has made me watch way LESS T.V., and I don't have to endure commercials.

17. Primary - Have I mentioned this before? :) I am SO in love with my calling at church I can hardly stand it! Children are SO MUCH closer to God than we are. I am so grateful to work with these precious little spirits. And to think that I went up to my room and BAWLED after I received the calling...I was so ignorant!

18. Internet - I love that I can Google anything and usually get an answer. My life is SO much easier because of computers.

19. Blogging - it has allowed me to journal, scrapbook, keep a family history, and keep in touch with friends and family all in one fail swoop! Hooray for less guilt over not doing those things!

20. All my kids sleep through the night in their own beds! All you Moms of young kids know how wonderful this is. Of course a part of me wishes I was as nice as my SIL who truly enjoys having her kids safe and snuggly beside her. If I liked it then that would be great, but I can't sleep a wink with them in bed with me. Am I selfish or what?!

21. I can stay home with my kids. I love being able to be there for the little everyday things. I like that my kids expect me to be there for them and that I'm the first one they look to for answers.

22. I live so close to my brother. Dave and Natalie are the best and it has been so nice to live by at least one member of our family after 8 years far away from anyone!

23. I live in a place where people might actually want to come and visit. TRANSLATION - please come and visit.

24. I've been able to travel to France, Italy, England, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt! And I'm just getting started!

25. That each new day is like a new chance...to do better...to be better...to live better.

26. That I don't have to do my taxes anymore. I did them for the first 11 years of our marriage.

27. I truly love to see other people succeed. I am genuinely happy for others and am NOT a jealous person at all.

28. That I have different thumbs. One looks just like my mom's, and one just like my dads. (I'll add the picture later) It freaks some people out, but I LOVE it.

29. Convenience. I live in such a great area and so many things are conveniently located. I know that sounds like a weird thing to love about my life, but as a SAHM of small children it makes all the difference in the world. I'm not a spender by any means, but the things that do see my money are the things that make my life easier, not necessarily prettier!

30. Finally realizing that it's all about the journey...not the destination. Keeping that in mind is a struggle many days, but I think I am really starting to "get it."

31. Amazing examples in my life. The list could go from prophets, neighbors, family members, friends, etc. There are so many good people on earth that it gives me a lot of hope.

32. 33 years of experience that has taught me more and more of who I am and what I want to be. I'm still in search of how to be the best me, but I'm so grateful for all the things I've gone through in my life that have brought me here.

33. My Faith. I don't at all mean to be preachy, or force my religion, but I have to be honest and say that it is the cornerstone of my life. I get so much inspiration, motivation, support, love, education, and fulfillment from my church. I am so grateful for forgiveness and the example and atonement of Jesus Christ.

Let's hope I'm just getting started on adding to this list. I love getting older...or should I say wiser!

RIP - Sammy Hammy Oct 2006-Feb 2008.

Our first pet Sammy Hammy (aka. Houdini) passed away peacefully on February 28th 2008. He was a good hamster who spent his days sleeping, and his nights scheming his escapes. He was successful many times in his attempts. We were always overjoyed when we found him in unexpected places. Sammy preferred the guest bathroom and made that his official vacation destination after trying out the master bathtub, Nora's closet, upstairs bathroom cupboards, and the master closet.

He is survived by his mourning family. Ella took the news particularly hard.

She and Sammy had a special bond that is immortalized by the T-shirt she got shortly after he joined our family.

We will miss you Sammy. Thanks for the memories.

M - A - X

Sunday March 2nd was my main man Max's 4th birthday. I love this kid so much and I'll try to explain a little bit why here:

M Marvelous, Mischevious, Macho, Maddening, Magnificent, Mysterious, MINE!

A Adorable, Alert, Alive, Animated
, Adventurous, Aggressive, Amused, ALL BOY!

X X-tra loving, X-tra energy, X-tra smart, X-tra funny, X-tra loud, X-TRA SPECIAL!

These pictures crack me up because they are SO TYPICAL MAX!! Or should I say Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde?

Max requested Pizza for his dinner and Paul thought I looked "so Betty Crocker" and he took these pictures. I had to add the second one because I wanted to point out my gracefulness in closing the oven with my foot. I wish I could say I made that lovely stuffed pizza from scratch, but I'll have to give the credit to Papa Murphy. I seriously LOVE THAT PLACE! I just picked it up the night before and kept it in the fridge until it was time to cook. VOILA!
I was laughing SO HARD when I took this picture in Wal-Mart the other day. Max insisted on bringing these toy glasses with him in the store. They once had dark lenses in them and were part of the "Cops" set he got for Christmas. Anyway, he wanted me to take a picture of him, so I did with my phone. When I saw the result I was ROLLING because he looks just like his Grandpa Colin!! I swear there is a picture of Grandpa with some large dark rimmed glasses and the nice buck teeth when he was about 10 or so. I've always thought he was the spittin' image...now I KNOW he is!!

Master Preston and Jack's Funny Quote!!

The school my kids go to had an assembly (aka propaganda) the other day where a "Karate Master" came and showed them some sweet moves and of course got all the kids hyped up about Karate. Don't get me wrong...I don't have anything big against Karate, I just don't love how they do it in a school assembly and then offer classes at the end. Yes, it is a school fund raiser, but how are you supposed to "fight the power" when your kids come home all brainwashed about how they HAVE TO do this. I HATE school fund raiser assemblies. I'd seriously just rather write a check. Am I lazy? Stuck-up? I just don't love asking people to buy things from me. If it's something useful I'll ask people that I think may want it anyway, but otherwise I order one for us and that's the end of it. Anyway, I was doing the Kindergarten pick-up that day and the three boys I picked up were in the backseat divulging their plethora of Karate knowledge to each other. Many of the statements started with "Master Preston said...." I deduce that he was the Grand Master of the propaganda/assembly and is now the new hero of all boys at the school. Then I hear my Jack say:

"Kung-Fu is Spanish for Karate in China." Huh?!!

Bejing Olympics 2008

I am so late trying to document my thoughts and feelings while watching the Olympics that I'll have to just highlight things I can remember.
First of all...I want to go to China SO BAD!! This picture just takes my breath away. I would love to walk/run atop the wall someday. I would thoroughly enjoy it.
The buildings/architecture was amazing and I loved seeing how each venue was designed for the specific events. I can't imagine the money and labor spent in these last few years to get ready.
Quickly, I just wanted to briefly touch on how moved I was while watching the opening ceremonies. I know about all the controversy and apparent propaganda that has been speculated on...BUT if you just take it on face value it was amazing. There were a few times where I literally gasped out loud. People are amazing...in their talent, vision, and execution. I was inspired. I love the Olympics.

HELP NEEDED!!

I am stumped!! I am supposed to be planning the Primary quarterly activity for the end of March and I seriously have NO IDEA of what to do. I was thinking of incorporating getting to know the new Prophet President Monson, but that is where the ideas end. I really am no good for this part of my job, so I'm calling on all you creative minds out there to help me out. Any input would be most appreciated!! Thanks. Keep in mind that the weather here will be FABULOUS the end of March, so that is a plus if any of the activities can be outside! Thanks ahead of time!

Meet Mary Grace!!

Image quality on this is really bad. It was the best I could do!

I am so excited I can hardly stand it!!! This is the first picture I have seen of my soon to be new niece Mary Grace. My sister Shauna and her husband Brian will be going to Taiwan to pick her up in a few months. I cannot describe the time, effort, and love that has gone into the process of joining Mary Grace to their family. I have said over and over to many people that my sister and her husband are SAINTS! I'm not kidding either. I am pretty sure they have a path already paved straight to the pearly gates. Perhaps someday I will have the time to tell the whole story, but let's just say that this is almost three years in the making. I could not be more thrilled! I just know she and Nora are going to be the best of buddies. CONGRATS SHAUNA, BRIAN AND BOYS! WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!

I'm just wondering...

BEFORE:

AFTER:

How am I supposed to feel when I come home from getting a haircut and my 5 year old greets me with, "what happened to your hair?" Then the 3 year old says, "Mom, why is your hair crazy?" The kicker was when all my husband said after that was, "Do you like it?" (say it to yourself putting the emphasis on the word like).

Ya, that's what I thought too. I'm trying to feel O.K. about it...I mean I really don't have a fragile ego. I'm just sayin'...

Sin City - aka Salt Lake City?

This article has ranked Salt Lake City, Utah (my hometown) as one of the most sinful cities. It was VERY interesting to me. Of course there is a lot of subjective data and you have to take it all with a grain of salt, but is there some truth to it?

For all my fellow Mormons out there you may be interested to compare this article with these words from Heber C. Kimball:

An army of Elders will be sent to the four quarters of the earth to search out the righteous and warn the wicked of what is coming. All kinds of religions will be started and miracles performed that will deceive the very elect if that were possible. Our sons and daughters must live pure lives so as to be prepared for what is coming.

After a while the Gentiles will gather by the thousands to this place, and Salt Lake City will be classed among the wicked cities of the world. A spirit of speculation and extravagance will take possession of the Saints, and the results will be financial bondage.

Persecution comes next and all true Latter-day Saints will be tested to the limit. Many will apostatize and others will be still not knowing what to do. Darkness will cover the earth and gross darkness the minds of the people. The judgments of God will be poured out on the wicked to the extent that our Elders from far and near will be called home, or in other words the gospel will be taken from the Gentiles and later on carried to the Jews.

Before that day comes, however, the Saints will be put to a test that will try the integrity of the best of them. The pressure will become so great that the more righteous among them will cry unto the Lord day and night until deliverance comes.

—Heber C. Kimball, First Counselor in the First Presidency, May 1868, in Deseret News, 23 May 1931; see also Conference Report, Oct. 1930, p. 58–59

So So Funny!!

Book review and random rantings!

I finished this book last week, and have had a hard time getting the characters out of my head. For me that's a sign of a good book. I'm sure I'm one of the last people on the planet to have read this, but it was worth the wait. I had so many thoughts running around in my head while reading. The biggest was, "how in the world can people be treated this way in the name of God/Allah or whatever?" Unfortunately I'm sure there are much worse TRUE stories out there and this is modern day. How could anyone believe that acts that degrade another human soul are condoned by God?

Of course I am profoundly dedicated to my faith, but I know of so many others that preach love, peace, uplifting of your fellow men, goodness, kindness, mercy, etc. I truly believe that "by their fruits ye shall know them." Fruits, being actions, that speak much louder than words. In my faith I have always felt cherished. I cannot tell how many times I hear leaders of my faith encourage and uplift women. I was always taught to get educated, go out and experience life, and believe that I can accomplish anything. The roles of men and women are often different, but guess what...we are different! Thank goodness. I am so grateful for the experiences I have had with dear friends of different faiths that have always been there to encourage and uplift me. I have been sad at many of the media reports that have shed my faith in an unflattering light. I'm grateful for my friends of these different faiths that have accepted me by my "fruits" and not judged me by what they may have "heard" from biased and judgmental sources.

Am I getting off on a tangent? Of course I am...that's me. But the point is that this book really made me think of all of us as children of our Heavenly Father. We may be in different circumstances in life, but we all have hopes, dreams, and love to share. We all need love and respect. We all love our children and have heartbreaks in life. Hopefully we can all come to see each other as more the same than anything else.

My brother just gave me a copy of the book Escape. It is about a woman who escaped the clutches of the polygamist clan ran by Warren Jeffs. Coming on the heels of the above book that also revealed a culture where women were oppressed and thought of as "less than," I'm not sure if I'm ready for it. I'm sure it will make me SO MAD!!! Especially because so many people still believe that they are affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Of course the media hasn't helped with that one either as they reported about them in front of the Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah?!! Sorry, but in my humble opinion Anderson Cooper is no genius. Just because he's easy on the eyes doesn't make him a great news man. Lately when I listen to him I laugh more than anything else. It does make me realize that I can't judge all of Islam by the radical faction. Again, I'm on a tangent.

So, what I started to write about was that I LOVED this book, and that I'm so grateful for a family and a faith that has always made me feel like the sky's the limit...and that I'm worth it. Thanks for enduring my random thoughts.

No Drug Rehab ect...

This is the first time I have contributed to Kara’s Blog; however, I do on occasion read the posts. It is always fun to see what our friends and families are doing. A little clarification on Kara’s recent post in which she talks about me, “being back...and going through difficult times”. The cocaine and kitty porn parties were the hardest habit to break. The IV Fentanyl, crushable Oxycontin were not that tuff to kick after the “shakes, convulsions, vomiting, and bad trips”, I did just fine.

I'm glad I cleared that up! The reality is that after the completion of any surgical residency if you want to be considered a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon then you must pass two board tests. The first is a written one (taken and passed last year), after which you have three years to then prepare and take the oral examination. I figured there is no time like the present and took the exams in back to back years, thus the “difficult times”, and stress over the last 6 weeks. The oral exam was completed in Dallas on V-Tines day. I do appreciate Kara and the kids for giving me time to study after work and on weekends. Kara took over MY daily jobs of: doing the laundry, dishes, vacuuming, cleaning the bathrooms, and cooking. Kara is the best, and yes I did get “Lucky” on Valentines day. In case you were wondering...I have returned to my above mentioned cleaning and cooking duties.

Sunday Stew - with a new ingredient -video.

How thrilled do I look to be cooking? But don't you love my apron? My MIL gave this to me for Christmas and it is my new after Church Sunday attire. Thanks so much Mary for such a fun, cute, thoughtful handmade gift!

So, this year Paul brought home flowers for all his girls for Valentines. (a couple days early) Sorry no picture of me with mine. The girls loved them, and it was so cute to see their reactions. Paul gave me the cutest little book that the kids wrote little notes to me in. He also gave me a Lucy gift card that I can't wait to spend. He was going to be out of town until really late Valentines night, but he hopped an early flight and walked in around 10:00pm. It was great and we got to spend the last couple of hours of Valentines together.

I know I don't talk about Paul a lot on this blog, but he is a really private person. I'm not sure how he would react to me putting things out there for the whole world to see, so I try to respect him. I do want everyone out there to know what a great guy he is. If you had any idea what he has been through the past couple of months (again, he's private so I won't say what), you would be so amazed and impressed at his willpower, dedication, self-discipline, etc. All I can say right now is that we are SO GLAD IT IS OVER!!! We love you so much babe and are so happy to have you BACK!

Okay, so I just read through that last paragraph and it totally sounds like he was in rehab or something. That is NOT the case...not even close. Next ingredient...

Here is the evolution of Max and his new birthday bike. The pictures tell the story quite well. His birthday isn't for two more weeks, but Daddy had the time to take him to choose his bike yesterday and we took advantage. He is so excited and I love that the weather is so good for it.

Last but not least, the big news of the week is that Ella got her ears pierced yesterday. She has been begging for it since Kindergarten and I just always said, "someday." I think I said when your 12 once, but I must have said 8 too because she had it in her head that it would happen when she was 8. This has turned into the focus of turning 8 instead of her baptism, so I figured it wasn't really that big of a deal and that we should go ahead and get it done now. She was SO DANG CUTE about it. I could tell on the drive (just the two of us...again, SO GLAD to have Daddy back) she was getting nervous. I told her that when we got there that if she changed her mind that was just fine.

So we get there and she chooses the plain little diamond studs. PERFECT! So, the worker comes over. As you can see from the pictures, she wasn't really striking any confidence in the mother of this precious girl who was going to permanently put holes in her ears!!! WHAT WAS I DOING?! She was actually a really nice girl and was great with Ella. She was very non-chalant and acted like it was no big deal...just what Ella needed. Ella was a champ, and is now over the moon about her new pierced ears. I think it looks really cute. So, this begs the quesiton...What is the big deal about pierced ears? Why did I want her to wait until she was 18? Why does it have to be such a big issue of deciding an appropriate age? I can see all sides of this argument and personally decided that it really isn't that big of a deal. We made Ella promise on film that this was her only piercings she would EVER GET. I'd like to think so...

Take this test!

You're green, the color of growth and vigor. Good-hearted and giving, you have a knack for finding and bringing out the best in people. Green is the most down-to-earth color in the spectrum — reliable and trustworthy. People know they can count on you to be around in times of need, since your concern for people is genuine and sincere. You take pride in being a good friend. For you, success is measured in terms of personal achievement and growth, not by status or position. Rare as emeralds, greens are wonderful, natural people. It truly is your color!
