Dancing with the stars
So, somehow we were watching Dancing with the Stars last night right when it was time to put the kids down. We've never really watched it, but I love watching people dance. Well, after watching two of the dancers Ella said to Paul and I:
"Their dresses show too much of their body."
I was really glad that she noticed. It's funny, because we have never really had the modesty talk. I'm blessed with a daughter who will wear whatever I give her, and has never put up a fight about clothes. Of course, if I don't choose it out for her she ends up with some interesting combinations. Proof she is my daughter!!
Anyway, I have rarely let her wear tank tops, and never let her wear short shorts and skirts. Again, I've never said anything about it, just done it! I guess actions really do speak louder than words. Now, I don't want to sound like anyone who has other rules is bad. I don't think there is anything wrong with little girls wearing tank tops, two piece swim suits, etc. I just know that for me it would be harder to try to change the rules when they are pre-teen and older, so I choose to just have that as an "always" rule. So, if your cute kids wear some of these things, please don't think I'm judging you. This is just what works for us!!
So, we told Ella that she was right and that we were proud of her. She then finished the conversation by saying:
"I would love to be on that show if I could choose my own dress, but if not then I wouldn't." What a sweetheart!

I think you're setting a great example for your kids! Example speaks much louder than words. And, it's obviously paying off!
Look what a pure spirit that little one has already. What a sweetie.
We have those always rules too. Sometimes I feel like I'm being too prudish, but I have the same dilema that I'm just afraid it would be too hard to switch them later. So it's nice to know someone else has the same one. Thanks for sharing. Ella is such a darling, hope our Ella has the same sweetness at that age.
my wo year old said the same thing last night but at our house it goes like this, "she's not very modest is she mom!?!?" they are very aware. they ALL notice.
good for you for being a good example to your kids. what a sweet little girl.
Good choice Ella! Whenever we see a group of teenagers out on a date dance all dressed up, I always point out to Romey how much prettier the modest girls look. She always agrees. My opinon(not that it's right) is that if kids don't understand the reasons for rules or the consciousness of actions, when in the oppurtunity to make their own choice they won't always choose the way we want them to. I figure that my job is to teach and explain the things I want for them and pray that they will understand, then given the situation they will choose the right (just a mothers prayer). It was eye opening to me when at church a few weeks ago, a mom was talking about how she has always had a strict rule of modesty in her home, to the mom's suprise she showed up to school without her 8 year old daughter knowing and found her daughter in a spaghetti strap top that her friend had brought to school for her. After a strict 2 week grounding, the mother dropped by the school again and found her daughter wearing another unapproved item. After this, came the guilt trip and a remorseful daughter who promised to never do it agian. Remember, I did say 8. How scary is that! I'm a little skeptical because who knows if the daughter has actually made the choice of modesty for herself or if she's just tired of the punishment. Darn that freedom to choose for ourselves. It sounds like Ella has made the choice for herself which is the true triumph.
I know what you mean. They all dress so skanky. I was even shocke at all of Maries "girls" hanging out of her dress! I guess that his how they figure they are going to get the men to watch. Very sad.
Love the Harry Potter costume, ha ha thats totally funny!
Ella is such a sweetheart! I hope that I can raise Anna to think that way for herself one day too.
