You can see how behind I am on everything because Nora's birthday was on March 18th! We were in Utah, and I cannot get my act together. Here are a couple of pictures from the celebration(s)!
GrandMary had party at her house for St. Patricks Day, Easter, and the March birthdays. Here is Nora with her birthday tutu on Crew's scooter! She loved pretending on that thing.
Here she is on her actual birthday at my sister Heather's house. She is patiently waiting for the cupcakes.
Not so patient after a while!

The time has arrived!!

Making a wish and blowing out the candles!
I found the video clip we sent to people after her birth...in our car. Yes, she was born in the car! I will post it below. Everyone asks me if I was freaking out. The answer is actually NO! I wasn't nervous at all...just shocked! I mean, that doesn't happen to rational people...that live 5 minutes from the hospital!! I'm sure a lot of it had to do with the fact that Paul was born in the car and I had heard the story so many times that I knew it could be done.
The time has arrived!!

Making a wish and blowing out the candles!
It was WAY low key this year, but she didn't seem to mind! Don't you love that adorable crown headband that GrandMary got for her? It was a perfect birthday girl accessory for the day!
Anyway, here is the story for documentation purposes. Nora is child #4 in 5 years. I had relatively fast labors with my first two, and a really fast one with #3. So, I knew it was possible for this one to be fast too. Ella was 9 days early, Jack was 11 days late (can you imagine my state of mind), and Max was just a day late. Here I was 4 days overdue having just endured a house fire. I will post about that later...scary scary scary!! Anyway, I had been running around like a chicken with it's head cut off for the last 5 days with the whole fire thing and was actually grateful that the baby was safely inside me at that time.
The night after all the fire cleanup was finished I woke up with contractions at about 2:00am. I knew this was probably it, but I hate waiting around the hospital so I decided to go and watch some T.V. to wait a while. After a half an hour I thought that I should call the hospital and see if the "birthing center" (a special room available on a first come first serve basis for mothers who are having natural births) was available. I figured if it was available I'd rush down there to get it. They told me it wasn't so I decided to sit in the bath and wait a while since I'd be in a regular room when I got there. Once I got in the bath the contractions were a lot stronger and less than 3 minutes apart. It has only been about an hour since I woke up at this point, and I convinced myself that they were stronger and closer because I was up and moving around getting the bath ready. I was sure they would settle down once I relaxed in the tub. NOPE! After ten minutes I figured I better get to the hospital and sit in their birthing tub. As I tried to get out of the tub and get dried off I only had about 30 seconds between contractions. I woke up Paul and told him we had to go. He rolled out of bed and started getting dressed. I had the hardest time getting dressed because I was hunched over waiting out the contractions.
I think Paul knew I meant business when we were about to walk out the door and I told him to go wake up my Mom and tell her we were leaving (thank goodness she was there). He said she would figure it out, but at this point I was on all fours and barked at him, "I'm not moving for at least one minute...GO TELL HER!" Once that contraction passed we got in the car. We weren't 1/4 mile away when yes, we got pulled over!!! I felt like I was in a bad sitcom!! Paul was tempted to keep going, but I was afraid we'd cause a much bigger incident. I HATE how long it takes officers to come to your window these days. Plus, they hang back and lean into the window like your going to lash out at them or something. When he came up to the window Paul just told him I was in labor and we needed to get to the hospital. He looked at me and said, "I'm also a medic...can I help?" NO!!! JUST LET ME GO TO THE HOSPITAL!!! Anyway, he let us go and followed us. Paul was on the phone most of the time with the hospital giving them the play by play. It's kinda nice when your hubby knows most of the staff. I don't think he realized the gravity of the situation because he kept calmly telling the ER, "She says we won't make it up to the delivery floor," or "She says we aren't going to make it to the ER."
Well, about a minute after the officer let us go my water broke! For me that means a baby is coming. This is my favorite part of the story. I told Paul that she was coming on the next contraction and proceeded to pull my pants down. He looks at me in horror and says "don't pull your pants down!!!" As if that's going to stave off the birth of the baby or something. I just looked at him and said, "I have to!" Just as I thought her head came out with the next contraction. I had been trying to lay my seat down but the dang carseat behind me wouldn't allow it!! We were in the hospital parking lot at this point and as her shoulders came out we were pulling into the ambulance bay. There was a line of doctors and nurses lined up with warm blankets and equipment. It was 15 degrees outside that March day.
We pulled up and they opened my door and started their work. Paul jumped in the backseat to unbuckle the carseat behind me and realized once he was finished that he couldn't get out because the car was surrounded. So, with his quick thinking he grabbed the video camera and started filming. Here is a short clip of what transpired after that. Don't worry, the over the shoulder shot makes for a completely PG viewing. The guy saying "go, go" is the police officer. Right before this shot he had asked me if I was mad at him. No, I wasn't, but I'm sure it made for some good stories for his buddies.
So, there you go! The first exciting minutes of our sweet Nora Jayne's life...two years ago! I was thinking that some good may come from this and that we would get a break on the hospital costs...not so! We actually got charged MORE!! They charged us with an ER fee, and a delivery fee. Their justificaiton was that they count the delivery as the place where the placenta is delivered...WHAT?!!! So, we got charged for the whole shabang and then some!! In hindsight, I just should have stayed home and had her there. Oh well, live and learn. We are so glad she is ours no matter how she came! We cannot imagine our life without her. She has the hearts of everyone in this family.

You are now my hero. Seriously. Amazing! I love her story. It could not be better. And that you have a video of it with the policeman and everything! It almost makes me wish I'd had mine in the car.
Okay. well, not. But it's pretty amazing.
That is such a fun story! One you and Paul will never forget. I am totally in tears right now, don't even ask why. I am just so amazed at the whole conception, pregnancy, birth, parenting thing. What a great great blessing she is to you family. And pretty dany cute too!
NO WAY!! You are so calm and chatty in that video. Pretty funny! ( I love love love delivering my babies, so it was fun to get excited for 7 months from now!)
That video is so GREAT! Fun to watch again. Both you and Paul are so good about it all.
Nora is darling. I love how excited she is about her pink cupcake. Happy Birthday Nora!
I CANNOT believe that story and I am so amazed how calm you were after you delivered her without drugs! Were you planning on going natural? Did you go natural with all your kids? You are my hero. She is so cute...I loved hearing her newby cry, makes me excited to hear my little one's cry anytime now!
Wow! what a nice little story!
I have checked in once in a while to your blog. Can't say how I found it-but saved it on my growing list of fave blogs of moms who keep it real and are entertaining.
that's you!
hope you don't go private, I think you probably inspire many women who may not speak up.
there's my .02
and now you know who I am.
Thank you for a good cry and a great reminder of how magically spectacular each child's entrance into this world is. The spirit is so strong as Heavenly Father passes them into our hands.
Happy birthday to a very blessed little girl.

I too cried my eyes out. What an amazing thing birth is. I had such an amazing experience with my little guy, nothing like this though. What a story she'll have to tell.
NO WAY!!
That is an awesome story... so glad you did so well! You seem so calm-- I think I would have been freaking out!!
Good thinking on Paul's part to get the video camera.
Happy b-day to Nora! It looks like it was a fun day. That video is my favorite. I LOVE that Paul had the clearheadedness to pull the video camera out!
I think I remember you telling me about this but to actually see it is amazing! You are my hero...so calm and cool!
Oh. my. heck! That is an amazing story! So fun to read, and that video is great. Thanks for sharing. What a blessing everything turned out well.
W.O.W. I honestly can't believe that you had cute Nora in the car.... truly amazing. I have always heard crazy stories like that but now know they really do happen. Love that you have it on video. Can't believe you did that all natural (not like you had a choice). I have always wanted to try but just seen to give in at the last minute. You are the woman. Love this post- thanks for sharing Kara.
Wowza! I had no idea Nora had such a heralded arrival- a police escort, doctors waiting at the door and lots of $$ hospital bills plus video to prove it all!
What an amazing story. I too have crazy fast labors and thought I might have my twin boys in the car. I had a 30 minute drive and I was dilated to a 7 before we left our house. If my water had broken, it would have been all over! Can't believe you really did have Nora in the car. Oh my! And of all the times to get pulled over. I am sure the police officer actually did feel a bit bad about the whole thing. (I loved hearing your voice on the video!)
Anyway, I know just where I was when you had Nora, at my home in Louisville on bed rest with the girls. I can't believe they are only 10 days apart.
Nora is lovely. She totally blew out her candles and loved wearing a crown- neither Brynn nor Kaitlyn would agree to that and Kaitlyn got lucky a mangaged to blow hers out, but just barely.
Happy Birthday! Great story.
why am I the only man commenting here? I always wanted to know what happens when you get pulled over on the way to the hospital. And I always wanted to know someone who gave birth in the car. All at once! Simply incredible. What an amazing story! I love the fact that in the video you turn and say, "We'll have to get the car detailed."
Nope, it's a minivan.
Happy Birthday Nora Jayne

That's the best! I remember hearing about it and I was in disbelief! It was so fun to actually see the video! You are extraordinary, I would've been a wreck. I'm not even sure I would have allowed my husband to videotape. Good work and Happy B-day to Nora Jayne. How long did it take to get the car detailed? :)
This is the most Amazing Story!!! wow, wow, wow! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it... what a beautiful smile on a beautiful little girl!
That is one of the most unique birth stories and to think you got it on video makes me, the viewer, feel a part of it. WOW!
Did you end up getting the car detailed after all?
looking forward to seeing you soon.
Kara...so great to see that video again! I will never forget calling your house that morning to tell you Christina had her baby the night before and your mom answering the phone telling me that Paul had picked up the kids and they were taking the car to get washed....she wanted me to hear the whole story from you, but i just thought it was so odd that Paul wanted to wash the car on the morning after she was born!!!! And then i finally heard the whole story.....Happy birthday Nora!!!
Nora looks so cute! Love the little crown.
It was great timing to have you all in town to celebrate all your March birthdays.
Happy Birthday to all of you again!
That video of her birth totally made me cry. Ever since I had Anna, whenver I see a baby born in a movie or TV, I totally cry. I just think that moment is so special. And I'm so glad you documented Nora's story! It really is one for the books. And fun that Paul was born the same way! (I think I've told you before, but my brother Morgan was born in the car in my parents driveway in DC!) You handled it so well. And the whole, "Don't take your pants off" thing always makes me laugh because I can see Dave saying that exact same thing.
Happy 2nd Birthday sweet Nora Jayne!!!
Amazing. I have heard you talk about this video but no words can describe the moment as well as this. I am so glad that you have it forever and that Paul was calm enough to pick up the camera! Your comment about getting the car detailed is so funny. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Hi!! I'm so glad you stopped by my blog,, and just a bit sad now that I'm not going to meet you at blogapalooza. It's such a small world.. I also saw your name on Mindy's blog, who was my roomate in college and friend from highschool.
Anywhoooo... I'm also on the 4 kids in 5 years club. And that video? It's my husbands worst nightmare. My deliveries go really fast... I think he would pass out and I would have to drive and deliver at the same time:)
Your family is beautiful.. and I must say there is something special about curly haired girls:)
I just watched this and teared up at how sweet it all is. Can you tell I'm baby hungry? How great you have it on video!
