This is a picture of me and my brother Dave in our good ol' van getting ready to take the annual trip to sunny AZ from Utah when we were kids. This was in the day before seat belt laws, and all were generally lax about car safety protocol. We would take out the back row or two of seats in the sweet van and lay out our sleeping bags (me and my 5 siblings). Of course the clam shell luggage carrier would be placed on top of the van for the trip. My parents would transfer us from our beds to the car while it was still dark, and we would hit the road. Once the sun was sufficiently beating down on us through the windows and we made our way out of the sleeping bags, we would entertain ourselves with card games, reading, coloring, road games, etc. All of this while sitting cross-legged on the floor in the back of the van. Sometimes I would make my way up to the front and perch myself on the cooler that was sitting between my parents two front seats. I loved sitting there on my "throne" and talking to my parents as we drove. I remember one time my brother and I lifted up one of the floor mats in the back and looked through a small hole and we could see the road speeding underneath us. Good times.......GREAT TIMES!!!
Well, I leave this morning to go up make the reverse trip up to Utah for a few weeks. I am so excited...for the Utah part I mean. I will be driving by myself with the four kiddos....no I'm not smoking anything.....actually it might help if I did (just kidding Mom). Really I will just make it up to St. George today where my Mom is, and then make the rest of the trip in tandem with her to SLC. Wish me luck! Actually, I will need more than that. Send me prayers....lot's of them!! We did finally break down and purchase a portable DVD player for the trip. I have been wanting one for a few years, but we had never pulled the trigger. Under these circumstances I felt justified.
It will be really nice to get up to the perfect SLC Summer weather. I have to laugh at the "Heat Wave" headlines where it talks about how Idaho is in the triple digits. I'm sure for people not used to it it's sweltering, but we got to 115 on the 4th of July, and we were outside for a good bit of the day. Granted we were on a boat, or in the water, but we survived. I can honestly say that I don't love it, but I can totally handle the heat. The fact that I can wear flip-flops year round more than makes up for it in my book! I'll be checking in from the Promised Land periodically, so don't forget about me!! Have a great Sunday everyone, and don't forget to pray for safe travel!

I love AZ for the flip flop reason alone!
What fun memories. Wouldn't road trips be easier...okay not safer...but easier if we could just let them free in the car? Good luck! Have a great trip!
I hope that your having a safe trip! You are succh a great mom to be heading to Utah with all 4 kiddos in tow! :) I know that druve all to well! :) If we had planned it we could have followed eachother. We just got home this week, but I am trying to fit 1 more trip in. Have a wonderful vacation with your family! :)
I am laughing because my family used to take out the seats in our big blue van and travel the same way on our trips to California. And we kept a cooler between Mom and Dad too. Fun memories. Somehow we all made it there and back and survived! Good luck with the road trip. Can't wait to see you and the cute kiddies!
Our van was a former boy scout van. That's right. We bought a boy scout reject van. We too could see through the floor in certain places. Thanks to droopy places in the ceiling my big brother, oldest of 5, could sneak home illegal fireworks from our trips to Wyoming. Did you ever put the back seats back in but reconfigure them, thus making it impossible to bolt them down? Fantastic fun, especially when the sibling with the learners permit is driving.
Hope your drive is safe and full of wonderful new memories for your little ones. Remember, tragedy plus time equals comedy. You'll be laughing about this drive with four little ones soon enough!
Kara, your memories sound WAY too familiar. My spot was on top of the cooler when we'd drive our van up to see you guys in SLC! I would put my pillow on top to make it a little more comfy. The youngest get all those nice perks! I love that our families made the effort to make those trips every year. I guess you're realizing now that it IS a big effort. Have fun in Utah. Tell Aunt Helen and Uncle Stuart hi for me. I love them SO much. Thanks for the fun memories!
I have lots of memories like that, we always left the seats in(something to sleep on and under) imagine 8 siblings and trying to find room!
I hope you have a safe trip, I drove to Utah with my 4 children twice and I feel the pain of long hours, but the dvd player will help.
Growing up my family owned the same van. Only it was solid poop brown and we did the same trip. There was also ten of us, definately no seat belt rules. just wanted to say thanks for the memories!!!!!
Loved the retro photo.
I am a BIG no HUGE fan of the portable DVD player for the kids.
No, I don't use it when we run to the store, but for a long distance trip there is nothing better than the sweet sound of quiet kids and the faint droning of Dora the Explorer. And I am learning Spanish from Dora....it's educational really.
You are awesome! I loved your "road trip memories"...
Have a great time in Utah!
